(Kitco News) – The current market environment offers precious metals investors “one of the more compelling upside setups we have seen in precious metals in months,” according to Scott Rubner, Head of Equity and Equity Derivatives Strategy at Citadel Securities.
Citadel Securities, the largest retail market maker in the United States, is now calling for structural exposure to gold for the first time in 2026, even as it sees enormous potential on the retain side for silver.
The investment giant sees five powerful catalysts converging to create asymmetric upside for both gold and silver: dovish Fed rate repricing, accelerating central bank purchases, net-short CTA positioning, bullish options dynamics in the biggest gold and silver ETFs, and a potential resurgence of retail participation.
Rubner focused his analysis of these catalysts on the SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD) and the iShares Silver Trust (SLV).
Citadel sees the implied volatility for GLD lifting from a low base, with put/call skew inverted to its deepest level since February, a combination that historically signals accumulating bullish conviction.
“We are seeing the same dynamic in SLV, with implied volatility beginning to lift and skew meaningfully inverting,” which suggests that the silver market is following gold's lead in repricing upside risk, the firm wrote in a recent note.
In terms of positioning, Rubner said his CTA analysis shows both gold and silver were net short as of August 6, a situation Citadel considers fuel for a surge rather than a headwind.
“With positioning still offsides versus an improving macro backdrop, renewed upside momentum could drive systematic buying and add another source of demand,” he said, because a price breakout could trigger a self-reinforcing covering rally among the many trend-following funds that currently find themselves on the wrong side of this trade.
Rubner also pointed to the ongoing market repricing of the Federal Reserve’s rate path toward a more dovish trajectory as a direct tailwind for non-yielding assets, adding that the continued weakness of the U.S. dollar serves to compound this dynamic.
Citadel also highlighted concerns surrounding potential Treasury and FX intervention as another factor that reinforces gold's reserve asset status in the midst of accelerating central-bank demand.
China also plays an outsized role in this gold demand narrative. Rubner cited Citadel Securities data which shows China's gold purchases have been accelerating on a monthly basis since at least December 2024, contributing to what they see as a broad-based strengthening of global official-sector gold demand.
Rubner said the largest unrecognized upside is actually found in the retail market, and in silver in particular. “Precious metals have largely been overlooked by retail amid the dominance of the AI trade, leaving significant capacity for participation to reaccelerate if momentum builds,” he wrote.
Rubner pointed to gold and silver’s early-year rally to all-time highs as a recent proof-of-concept for this retail buy-in. “The January-February rally demonstrated how quickly retail can become a meaningful source of incremental demand,” he said.
The confluence of these five catalysts form what Rubner characterized as a rare simultaneous alignment.
